Die Stille Vor Bach : One Highlight from IFFR 2008

Yesterday I saw a highly original, engaging and rewarding movie called Die Stille Vor Bach. If you like creativity, art, classical music and/or Bach, this one is not to be missed. It just blew my mind. Visually stunning, good conversations about the meaning and role of music in life, musical masterpieces and different references to the history of art.

Recap and My Top 12 Movies of 2007

After a very hectic working period I am back with some reviews of the year 2007 and some predictions.  I will jumpstart with my top 12 favorite movies for this year.

But first a recap and a necessary explanation for my readers. In November, there was among others the third Mobile Monday Amsterdam event (again successful with 220 attendants), my presentation on Nijenrode University on digital marketing within the Metaverse (this link on SlideShare for the whole presentation), my whole-day workshop at HRO on the Metaverse, different columns for Emerce, Reclameweek, Marketingfacts, Energize, ICSB as well as FEM Business ranging from marketing, communications, trends, web 2.0 and the best books for managers on digital media. Furthermore, my Twitter life didn't stop due to its incredible richness and innovativeness (last night was special due to the spontaneous OLPC campaign (One Laptop Per Child) resulting in 17 free laptops for the poorest in our world). Furthermore, I have visited Valencia in Spain (great city, architecture, food and atmosphere outstanding Felipe Science Museum, especially on genetics) and Paris (LeWeb3 event with some fantastic speeches by Nokia (their OVI release is a key milestone on the evolution of the mobile internet relative to Google and Apple), Doc Searls, Joi Ito, Hans Rosling, Jason Calacanis, Friis, Dave Winer, Ragmaswami). Here can see all the videos / presentations from LeWeb3, recommended viewing. On top of that was my 'normal freelance 40-hour work week' at Direct Wonen doing my digital marketing and redesign tricks, so you can probably imagine why there was no time left for me to blog :-)

And now...my top 12 movies of the year 2007:

  1. Das Leben der Anderen / The Lives of Others
  2. Pan's Labyrinth
  3. The Prestige
  4. Atonement
  5. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
  6. Sound of Sand
  7. Transe
  8. Last King of Scotland
  9. Becoming Jane
  10. Control
  11. Sketches of Frank Gehry
  12. Eastern Promises

So what are your favorites of the year ?

The War Tapes : Impressive, Real and User Generated Videos from the Iraq War

Just saw a new video on TED on The War Tapes, a powerful and courageous documentary with user generated videos shot by soldiers themselves during the Iraq-US war. Impressive stuff, especially the emotional degradation illuminated in the trailer as well as the speech itself by Deborah Scranton. Watch for the last 4 minutes.

Pan's Labyrinth

Just saw the movie Pan's Labyrinth. Stunning, breathtaking visuals, enchanting and immersive. One of my favorite movies this year.

It is remarkable in many ways:

  • The name Moana :-D
  • The subtle integration of different genres (war, fantasy, drama, thriller)
  • It reminded me of some of my favorite movies like Citizen Kane, A Nightmare on Elm Street, La Vita รจ Bella and Dancer in the Dark with themes like dreams, demons, redemption, love, inner convictions/beliefs, purpose, imagination and individuality
  • The intertwining of virtual and real worlds (augmented reality, mixed reality, virtual worlds anyone ?)

Recommended.

Holographic Video in a Cost-Effective and Practical Way

Stunning. Cost-effective and practical holographic video is around the corner. More in this link from Technology Review. I used to think the development of holographic storage and video would take many years to come. Somehow MIT is advancing faster than predicted. How does it work ? The modulator converts a video signal into a vibration. When laser light is passed through the modulator, the vibrations modify the brightness and frequency of the light. The altered light is then shined on a screen, and the varying intensities and frequencies create a three-dimensional hologram.

What does this mean ? Will 3D video become mainstream across the board ? (e.g. 3D TV, 3D movies, 3D Web (Web 3.0; Google Earth+SketchUp as well as Second Life) and 3D printers). Or does 2D still provide most value while the different 3D propositions fill in niche applications ? When is 2D best and when 3D ? In my view 3D will become standaard within 10 years across the board due to the enriched experience, lower costs and practical benefits. And when will (smart) mobile devices become 3D ? And which exciting eMarketing videos can be made using holography ?

"The tyranny of two-dimensional computer and TV displays could soon be over. A team of MIT researchers has proposed a way to make a holographic video system that works with computer hardware for consumers, such as PCs with graphics cards and gaming consoles. The display, the researchers say, will be small enough to add to an entertainment center, provide resolution as good as a standard analog television, and cost only a couple hundred dollars.

A holographic video display could provide another way to view medical images such as MRIs and CT scans, as well as sets of complex, multidimensional data and designs for furniture and cars, says V. Michael Bove Jr., director of the consumer electronics program, CELab, at MIT. And the system would be a natural fit for displaying video games and virtual worlds."
